And your sa.. has no password?|||check out www.connectionstrings.com

hth|||First case:
- you use thrusted autentication. This means you are using the same user account the web page runs under, to connect to your database (this is the ASP.NET user account). By default, it has no access to the SQL Server database. If you want it to have access, add it to the database logins

Second case:
- the password is blanc. Probably this is wrong...

Any suggesstions please

I am passing a XML string from client, In the back end I
am verifying the data with constraints of the columns.
Exec sp_xml_preparedocument @.hdoc OUTPUT,@.xml
select * into #tempApps
from openxml(@.hdoc, N'//application',2)
with AP_Applications --This is the physical table
EXEC sp_xml_removedocument @.hdoc
The system will create an ApplicationId at the time of
inserting a new record. Before inserting a record I am
checking the data.
When I run the above code I am getting the following
error.
Unexpected NULL value returned for
column '[OpenXML].AppId' from the OLE DB
provider 'OpenXML'. This column cannot be NULL.
OLE DB error trace [Non-interface error: Unexpected NULL
value returned for the column: ProviderName='OpenXML',
TableName='[OpenXML]', ColumnName='AppId'].
I will appreciate you can give some suggestions.
Thanks in Advance
You cannot use a table name with an identity column in the with clause. You
have to give the with clause (without the Identity column) explicit.
Best regards

Any SQL equivalent of InStrRev()?

In VB, there's a string function called InStrRev() which returns the
position of an occurrence of one string within another, from the end of
string.
I have a column containing data such as "/uploads/encrypted/design1.doc". I
want to be able to extract the pure filename from this column (e.g. returns
"design1.doc" from the above example).
In VB, I could use InStrRev(columnData, "/") to locate the last slash '/'
and then extract the rest of the string from that position.
Is there a similar way to do this in SQL script?
Thank you.DId you try something using CHARINDEX(REVERSE())?
SELECT CHARINDEX('x', 'foobarxgoo')
SELECT CHARINDEX('x', REVERSE('foobarxgoo'))

The only way I can find this useful is if I REVERSE the string (i.e.
"/uploads/encrypted/design1.doc" to "cod.1ngised/detpyrcne/sdaolpu/"), then
find the first instance of a slash "/". Truncate the rest of the string.
That would get me "cod.1ngised". And finally, REVERSE again to get
"design1.doc".
But that sounds like a lot of calls and could slow down performance!
What do you think?

Obviously, any nested string manipulation functions done over a large
dataset is going to impact performance ( VB is no different either ). In
many cases it might be negligible. If it is a crucial issue, rather than
putting the entire path in a single column, consider using a separate column
for the file name.

Any one used Application Role before?

I'm using vb6 and i'm trying to create a connection string using an
application role.
If this is possible.
I don't know what the string should look like or whether i have put
everything in place.
I'm using Windows Authentication Mode. However I created a Application Role
and password for my app. Should i use this to connect to the db so i don't
have to use a userid? I shouldn't need a windows login to use an application
.
According to my book: "After the application has enabled and application
role, all permissions of the user are suspended, and only the permissions of
the role are enforced." Then it says later: "The best part is that all
activity is still audited with the users' login information."
Microsoft said at
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/d...
ahx.asp :
"Use the Integrated Security keyword, set to a value of SSPI, to specify
Windows Authentication (recommended),
or
use the User ID and Password connection properties to specify SQL Server
Authentication.
Security Note When possible, use Windows Authentication. If Windows
Authentication is not available, prompt users to enter their credentials at
run time. Avoid storing credentials in a file. If you must persist
credentials, you should encrypt them with the Win32? crypto API. For more
information, see "The Crypto API Function" in the MSDN? Library at this
Microsoft Web site."
I don't can't make sense of both of these statements. How do they work
together or do they contradict? What should i do?
Here is my connection String
Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Integrated Security=SSPI;Persist Security
Info=False;Initial Catalog=DatabaseName;Data Source=ServerName
I'm able to get it to work with my login using Windows Authenticity, but
everyone can't use my login name. I can't set permissions for all users
either.
Thanks! You still need both a login (SQL Server or Windows) and a user name in the d
atabase. Then you app
uses sp_setapprole to enter the application role. If you aren't familiar wit
h SQL Server security
architecture, read in Books Online on the topic (so you understand both the
login and the user name
concepts).

Any ideas on this one ?

If your RS parameter is set to a string, the original

This doesn't seem to work, if I set it to string and do the convert it still
shows the time.
I'm trying to do it the other way around but get syntax error, what could be
wrong here:
CREATE FUNCTION udf_MyDate (@.indate datetime, @.separator char(1))
RETURNS Nchar(20)
AS
BEGIN
RETURN
CONVERT(Nvarchar(20), datepart(mm,@.indate))
+ @.separator
+ CONVERT(Nvarchar(20), datepart(dd, @.indate))
+ @.separator
+ CONVERT(Nvarchar(20), datepart(yy, @.indate))
END
GO
SELECT DISTINCT PERIODESTART, DAY(PERIODESTART) AS Expr1, [dbo].[udf_MyDate]
(periodestart,'/') AS pstart
FROM DEBSTAT
WHERE (DAY(PERIODESTART) <> '31')
ORDER BY PERIODESTART
DROP FUNCTION [dbo].[udf_MyDate]
JackJack, recommend you check Books on Line. Here's what it says:"Using CONVERT:
CONVERT ( data_type [ ( length ) ] , expression [ , style ] )"
Style is very useful here; you may need to experiment with it until you get
the output you want. By using this, you won't need a function. You can use
the convert statement in your query.
I hope this helps you.

Any facility to hold string data of length more than 8000 characters?

Hi,
I have a typical scenario in one of our application.
In a Stored Procedure, I need to get values from different fields and form a
select statement.
The problem here is each field may be upto a length of 8000. So after
forming the final query it will exceed length of 8000. How to concatenate
these field values to form a query which will have length of more than 8000
characters? Is there any data type allows this or is there array concept?
Please provide a solution. Help of any sort is highly appreciated.
Thanks,
Su ManSu,
You concatenate them right at the execution statement:
EXEC(@.str1 + @.str2 + ...)

I couldn't agree more!|||Ilya,
Eevery statement will not have end.
Statement1 may be - select a,c,h,j,e from gggjjjh
Statement2 may be - where t1.a = t2.b
Statement3 may be - group by g,k,l
Statement4 may be - having s = 'value'
Statement5 may be - Order by w,k
The above are just indcative and each statement may be upto a lengh of 8000.
Considering the above,
Statement1+Statement2+Statement3+Stateme
nt4+Statement5 may sum up to 40000
and which data type can hold the string.
Or is there any concept of array where I can hole all individula statements
and finall concatenate to execute.
Please reply.
Thanks,
Su man

any easy way to modify string in dbase

HI I have a database with a string as one of the fields and I need to modify
only a portion of the string. For example below is a record in the database
old string
server1/folder1
want to change to
server2/folder1
Paul G

REPLACE is one good option. Here is an example:
create table #test111
(scode int,
sdesc varchar(30))
insert into #test111 values (1,'server1/folder1')
insert into #test111 values (2,'server1/folder1')
update #test111 set sdesc = replace(sdesc,'server1/','server2/')
where scode = 1
select * from #test111

any advantage using an xml string as parameter

Hi,
I just wanna know the pros and cons while using XML string as argument to the procedure. Which one will be better in terms of security and performance.
regards
Aneesh R.
That depends on what you want to do with the parameter. Could you please be a bit more specific?

Aneesh R.
|||Some items are dependent on your perf and scaling requirements:
- Are you planning on using OpenXML to unshred it? You may find that large XML documents may be problematic from a scaling point of view (>100kB). Small ones should be fine.
- Are you planning on using a T-SQL statement instead to parse a CSV format? That may be less efficient, but performance tests should be done.
Some items are general security items:
- Do you expose the stored proc parameter to arbitrary users? In that case there are some DoS scenarios that you may need to prepare for by checking for them on the mid-tier. If you have full control over the XML format that you send, then there is no more or less security than on any other data value that you send.

ANSWER: Re: SQLEXPRESS Database Issue - Cannot open database ASPNETDB.MDF requested by the login

Hello Guys

This is my connection string

<add name ="ASPNETDBConnectionString1" connectionString ="Data Source= .\SQLEXPRESS; Integrated Security = True; DataBase = ASPNETDB.MDF; User ID = MyWindowsUserName; Password = MyWindowsPassword; User Instance = False; Connect Timeout = 30" providerName ="System.Data.SqlClient"/>

I tried to research on the internet and i got a solution on changing the permissions for this database to enable user SystemName/ASPNET, but iam not able to access this ASPNETDB.MDF from SqlServer and if i go to server explorer in vs2005, i dint know where to chage the permissions.

Can anyone help me on this.

Thanks a lot

The ASPNET account needs to have access both to the server and to the ASPNETDB database. It seems you have granted server access to the account, but not database access.

To grant database access, connect to SQL Server using Management Studio and execute the following SQL statements:

use ASPNETDB
go
create user [SystemName\ASPNET]
go

Thanks
Laurentiu

hi,

Thanks for your info abt the adding of aspnet account in the ASPNETDB Db.

I have created a website using VS 2005, and my SQL Server 2005 -STD Edition(NOT SQLEXPRESS). When ever i try to connect to the database i get this following error : Cannot open database ASPNETDB.MDF requested by the login, login failed. Login failed for user DOMAIN|USERNAME.

FYI, I have added my DOMAIN\username in the Security - Logins of the Database. I have also done the user mappings. That screen reads as follows :
1. Master Database -

Still I get this error. Please help me understand that whether any other permissions is required in the database for me.

Thanks

hi,

I get this error when i try to execute a website just having a DEFAULT.aspx in which i have added a webpartsmanager. the personalization property of the webpartmanager is set to TRUE and USER. The following steps I did:

1. Installed the Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 9.00.1399.00 ( STANDERD EDITION).

2. from the C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727 installed the aspnet_regsql and followed the steps in installing the aspnetdb database.

In the usermappings i have provided permissions to me "DOMAIN\USERNAME" to the following db: 1. master 2. msdb 3. tempdb 4. aspnetdb

3. in the edit global configuration removed the USER INSTANCE=TRUE from the following
Data Source=.\MSSQLSERVER2005;Initial Catalog=aspnetdb.mdf;Integrated Security=True

4. edited the machine.config file under the C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\CONFIG
as
<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=.\MSSQLSERVER2005;Initial Catalog=aspnetdb.mdf;Integrated Security=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

After doing this i tried to execute the website that i have created which holds a default.aspx page in which i have the webpartmanager. I just wanted to view this file in the browser. As soon as i do this i get this error.

Cannot open database "aspnetdb.mdf" requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'DOMAIN\USERNAME'.

Thanks in advance for the solution. Please help.. if anyone has a solution please send it immediately to my email id : sriranga.kr@.gmail.com

hi

all i did was removed the .mdf in the connection string and run the same. It works like a charm..

great...

|||

hi sreeksdave

all you need to do is to change the following :

<add name ="ASPNETDBConnectionString1" connectionString ="Data Source= .\SQLEXPRESS; Integrated Security = True; DataBase = ASPNETDB.MDF; User ID = MyWindowsUserName; Password = MyWindowsPassword; User Instance = False; Connect Timeout = 30" providerName ="System.Data.SqlClient"/>

AS

<add name ="ASPNETDBConnectionString1" connectionString ="Data Source= .\SQLEXPRESS; Integrated Security = True; Initial Catalog= ASPNETDB" providerName ="System.Data.SqlClient"/>

and see how it works..

Do let me know..

Regards

scotty

|||I think this should be rather aspnetdb than aspnetdb.mdf, if you use a user instance you have to specify the filename but with attached database you can just type in the name of the database.

Remember that both files ASPNETDB.MDF and aspnetdb_log.LDF are in a folder call App_Data in you project solution, just make sure that you give the right access privileges to your local MACHINE\ASPNET account

Hope this will help
